Why PINC cancer rehabilitation?

PINC cancer rehabilitation physiotherapists are highly trained to help women affected with cancer and the effects of treatment, reconstructive surgery and medication.

Did you know?

•More than 40% of those born today will develop some type of cancer during their lifetime. Due to advances in care for cancer, the 5- year relative survival rate for all cancers diagnosed has increased to 67%.

•Cancer survivors have an increased lifetime risk of developing new primary cancers, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and functional decline. These risks can be greatly reduced with well designed exercise program.

Unmet needs

In a recent review, 63% of cancer survivors reported at least one rehabilitation service needs with physiotherapy being the most frequently reported.

Some impairments included:

  • Pain, scar adhesions, peripheral neuropathy

  • Lymphedema, osteoporosis, loss of movement

  • Loss of muscle tone and strength, low bladder or bowel control

  • Fatigue, nausea, depression

  • Decreased functional and cognitive capacity

  • Reduced sleep, decreased energy levels

  • Decreased body confidence, poor fitness levels

  • Increased incidence of co-morbidities

Many cancer survivors do not return to optimal exercise levels due to uncertainty towards the kind of activity that is suitable, or due to physical limitations or pain. These limitations have a significant negative impact on their quality of life and survivorship.

While acute care and treatment is well managed in hospital, often cancer survivors find themselves left with side effects and other symptoms. These can be greatly improved with an optimal approach, addressing fatigue, pain, lymphedema, with well designed graded activity program, hands on approach, advice on assistive devices, teach techniques to help enance recovery from cancer treatment. Cancer rehabilitation physiotherapists are specifically trained with regards to specific knowledge of their condition.
